STL participates in "Cut a kilo of CO2" day

STL Communications staff cycled, walked or car shared to work on Friday 4th June 2010 to celebrate World Environment Day. Other staff recycled cans and bottles, and one even planted a tree.

STL was supporting The Carbon Neutral Company’s “Cut a kilo” of CO2 day, which aims to encourage businesses to cut out a kilo of carbon dioxide. Although this is a small amount achievable by everyone in the office, as STL proved, once the initial saving has been made it is easier to build up to bigger targets.

World Environment Day is celebrated each year on 5th June and is a United Nations’ initiative aimed at promoting worldwide environmental awareness and action. As the 5th of June falls on a Saturday this year, STL used the “Cut a kilo” initiative to engage employees to further reduce CO2 emissions within the workplace.

Leading from the top, Brendon Cross, STL’s managing director, cycled 6 miles to work as did Phil Donigan STL’s sales director. Phil commented, “It made me realise that it really is not so far and that I should cycle more often.” Other staff shared this sentiment, especially those who car shared for the first time.

STL has helped over 500 customers offset their carbon phoneprint using STL’s GreenMinutes, a carbon neutral telephone call initiative that also enables clients to work smarter using a range of free eco features such as connection of home workers and conference calls. As an organisation, STL has a strong environmental ethos and has actively made significant changes to business procedures so that they operate in a more environmentally friendly way whenever possible.

Phil Donigan, STL’s sales director, concluded, “Today was a fun way to engage with helping the environment and to remind all STL staff that we can all try harder to be greener. The environment is a key part of STL’s ethos and we have made huge progress to reduce internal change.”
